It’s not just limited to Canada or the United States either. All around the world, there are a variety of unique local colloquialisms for talking about cannabis. For example, in Australia, you would buy a stick, a quarter, half a bag, or a bag. Different countries and states within the same countries have their own unique and interesting ways of referring to different amounts of cannabis.

Both grams and ounces are two completely different measurement systems. Grams are part of the metric system, and ounces belong to the imperial system. The imperial measurement system is a base-twelve system, while the metric system is a base-ten system.

What does this mean? It means that in the metric system, weights are divided into tens. For example, a kilogram is 1000 grams, half of a kilogram is 500 grams, and a quarter of a kilogram is 250 grams and so on. It’s an easy and effective way to breakdown measurements and is used by a variety of different countries around the world as their unit of measurement.

There are only three counties in the world where the metric system hasn’t been widely adopted, the United States of America, Liberia, and Myanmar. In these three countries, they largely use the imperial system for measuring weights and lengths. The metric system was developed much later than the imperial system as a more convenient and simplified system.

If you find yourself in the United States buying cannabis or in Canada sometime, you’re going to run into both units of measurement whenever you’re buying cannabis. For some reason, cannabis companies and cannabis dealers have never quite been able to step entirely into either the imperial or metric camp. Most sit halfway, using pieces of both measurement systems whenever they’re selling cannabis.

Most of the cannabis producers that are producing large quantities of cannabis prefer to deal with the metric system as it’s easier to manage large amounts. Most of the time, cannabis producers are going to sell their cannabis by kilograms.

It starts to get a little bit funny from there. The people buying cannabis from producers or growers usually sell their cannabis in bars or half bars. A bar equals approximately nine ounces, and half a bar is four point five ounces.

For the average person walking into a dispensary or buying weed online, they aren’t going to buy it by the ounce. They are more likely to buy their weed in smaller quantities. This is where you’re going to run into the smaller weed measurements, such as an eighth or a tenth. Like we already mentioned above, an eighth is one-eighth of an ounce while a tenth is a sixteenth of an ounce.

As we discussed a little earlier in the article, a kilogram can be broken down in ounces, but how many ounces are in a kilogram? Most people that have ever had to break it down would tell you that there are 36 ounces in a kilogram. That’s pretty close, but there are actually 35.274 ounces in a kilogram. If you’re buying weed by the ounce and you want a kilogram’s worth, and you get thirty-six ounces, you’re actually coming out in front every time.

Now that we know how much an eighth is and how many grams there are in an ounce of cannabis, it’s time to start moving on! In the following section of the article, we’re going to take a look at different ways that you can accurately measure your cannabis when you are buying it.

1. Using a Scale – One of the easiest ways to measure your cannabis and ensure that you are getting what you want is to use a scale. If you’re using and buying a lot of cannabis, then an accurate scale is a great way to ensure that you’re getting what you paid for. It can cost a little bit of money upfront, but if you’re using it frequently, then it’s going to pay for itself quickly. You want your scale only to be accurate, but it needs to be able to measure up to approximately 200 grams. 2. Using your Eyesight – This method isn’t one of the most accurate ways to measure your weed. Many professional cannabis users can tell fairly accurately how much their weed weighs just by giving it a good look over with their eyes. The advantage of measuring your weed this way is that you won’t have to pay for a scale, but there are some obvious drawbacks to this method. Different strains of cannabis are all going to have different levels of denseness. They could also be slightly damp or green still, which will make them look dense and weigh more.
3. Using a Ruler and a Penny – This is a real and effective way to measure 2.5 grams of cannabis effectively. A penny weighs 2.5 grams. If you balance a ruler with a penny on one end, then place the cannabis on the other end, when it balances, you’ll have 2.5 grams of cannabis. The obvious drawback to this method is that you can only measure 2.5 grams of weed, and you always have to carry around a penny and a ruler.
4. Using your Smart Phone – With the rise of technology and smartphones, we have been lucky to see a variety of new applications hit the market, and one of those apps is a scale app. Some smartphones have the ability to measure weight with the right application installed.

Advancements in technology across a variety of different sectors have made it much easier to weigh things like cannabis. However, if you’re buying cannabis from reputable sources, the chances are pretty high that they are providing you with accurate amounts of cannabis. If you have any worries, you can always weigh the weed yourself afterward and address it directly with the company or dispensary if there are any discrepancies.

1. A Gram of Weed – When you’re looking at a gram of cannabis, it’s usually just a very small nugget or bud of cannabis flower. The size can be influenced by how dense or fluffy the cannabis strain is. Some could be as small as a penny or as large as a crumpled up note. The smallest measurement of that most people will sell cannabis in is an eighth or teenth. Some dispensaries, however, will sell their small amounts of cannabis as pre-rolled joints or spliffs.

4. A Half Ounce of Cannabis – A good half ounce of cannabis should weigh 14 grams and is a great way to get good value for money when you’re buying weed. We don’t recommend buying a half-ounce of cannabis unless you’re sure that you like the strain of cannabis.
5. An Ounce of Cannabis – If you’re going through quite a lot of weed, and you already know that you love a particular strain of cannabis, then an ounce is the most cost-efficient way to purchase your cannabis. The price of an ounce can vary greatly depending on where you but it and what type of cannabis you’re buying.

• Tip One – To get the most enjoyment out of your cannabis, it’s important that you grind it correctly. You can grind your cannabis by hand, using a small hand-powered grinder or an electric grinder. It helps to reduce the air pockets in the cannabis and ensure that it vapes or burns more evenly.
• Tip Two – There are a variety of different names for cannabis, and if you know them, all you’ll be more prepared for when you have to purchase your cannabis. If you’re planning on traveling across the border to the United States with your cannabis to a state in the US where weed is legal, don’t! Even though cannabis may be legal in Canada and also in the state you’re traveling to, it’s illegal to transport cannabis from one country to another.

It’s also important to check on the legal status of cannabis in the state that you’re traveling to. Not all states have legalized marijuana in the US, and some states still carry very hefty fines and jail sentences for possessing even small amounts of cannabis.

Legalized states in the US and Canada have a fairly stable price for weed, and the other factors start to impact the price of weed more than the location.
